Snowmobiles are engineering marvels, designed specifically to dominate deep powder and backcountry trails. However, they suffer from a significant limitation: seasonality. For most of the year, these expensive machines sit idle in garages, waiting for the return of winter. In an era where powersports equipment prices are rising, the idea of a single-use machine is becoming increasingly difficult for many enthusiasts to justify.
As reported by RideApart, citing information from The Drive, there was once a clever solution to this problem: the Wunder Wheels trike kit. This product allowed owners to transform their snowmobiles into three-wheeled ATVs once the snow melted, effectively turning a winter-only vehicle into a year-round recreational machine.
The History of Wunder Wheels
The Wunder Wheels kit originated from a Canadian company called Forward Ideas Limited, which was established in 1968 by Andry Balazs. According to internal documents shared within enthusiast groups, Balazs sought out an inventor to create a versatile conversion system. The design was realized by British inventor Donald Sessions.
The kit functioned by removing the snowmobile’s front skis and rear track. It utilized a steel frame that attached to the chassis, providing a steering assembly for two front wheels and a drive sprocket for a single rear wheel. This effectively converted the snowmobile's two-stroke powertrain into a functional trike.

Why Bring Them Back?
While skeptics might argue that the modern ATV and UTV market has rendered these kits obsolete, the economic argument remains compelling. Modern enthusiasts are often forced to choose between specialized equipment due to storage space and budget constraints. A high-quality, factory-supported conversion kit could allow owners to maximize the value of a single engine and chassis.
Imagine the potential of applying this modular philosophy to today’s high-performance, turbo-charged two-stroke engines. By bridging the gap between winter snowmobile riding and summer trail riding, manufacturers could provide a much more palatable investment proposition for the average consumer. While currently a relic of the past, the Wunder Wheels concept serves as a reminder that with enough ingenuity, the riding season never truly has to end.
