As spring unfolds in 2026, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is once again promoting Motorcycle Awareness Month throughout May. This annual campaign serves as a crucial reminder to all motorists to be mindful of motorcycles on the road, especially as riding season picks up.

Motorcycle Awareness Month, established in the early 1980s, aims to foster a dialogue between all road users – motorcyclists, car drivers, and truck drivers alike – regarding safe practices and mutual respect. The AMA and its network of clubs have been consistent supporters of this initiative since its inception.

According to the AMA, Motorcycle Awareness Month is a perfect opportunity to remind motorists to be vigilant and respect riders on our roads and highways. It also allows for addressing key concerns impacting rider safety and stressing the importance of riding safely and respectfully, according to AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman.

Key focuses of Motorcycle Awareness Month, according to the AMA:

  • Combating distracted driving.
  • Addressing the rise of autonomous vehicles and Automated Driving Systems.
  • Lane-filtering and lane-splitting considerations.

The AMA emphasizes that Motorcycle Awareness Month serves as a reminder that both motorists and motorcyclists must actively work together to reduce accidents on our nation’s highways.
